How To Use The Dialer Direct to Voicemail Feature

Direct to Voicemail is a Doximity app feature that allows Doximity members to connect directly to a patient’s voicemail and leave a message without completing a live call. This feature is available in the Doximity app under the Dialer tab for both iPhone and Android users.

Note: The Doximity Website and iPad devices do not currently support the Dialer Voicemail feature

How to use Direct to Voicemail:

  1. Open the Doximity app and select the Dialer tab
  2. Select your preferred Caller ID number at the top of the screen
  3. Dial your patient's number and then tap Direct to Voicemail
  4. Your call will then be routed directly to the patient’s voicemail, allowing you to leave a message. The patient will receive a voicemail notification and see a missed call, but their phone will not ring.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Direct to Voicemail work when calling landlines?
No. Direct to Voicemail is not supported for landline or VoIP (voice over IP) phone numbers.

Does Direct to Voicemail work when calling international numbers?
No. International numbers are not currently supported.

Direct to Voicemail only works when calling 10-digit U.S. mobile phone numbers. You can use this feature to connect directly to the voicemail box of any U.S. mobile number, regardless of location or phone carrier.

What if my patient doesn’t have their voicemail box set up?
If the patient’s voicemail box is not set up or is unavailable, the Direct to Voicemail feature will not connect, and the call will end. You can still call the patient directly using the standard Dialer phone call feature in the Doximity app.

What will my patient see when I use the Direct to Voicemail feature?
Your patient will receive a voicemail notification from the Caller ID number you selected when placing the call.

If that number is saved in your patient’s contacts, their phone will display it according to how they have it saved.

Can my patient pick up the incoming call?

Direct to Voicemail is designed to connect you directly to your patient’s voicemail. However, cellular carriers may vary slightly in how they support voicemail calls.

In very rare cases, some smaller carriers may allow the call to be answered if the patient taps the answer button at just the right moment.

This occurrence is uncommon, but if it happens while using the Direct to Voicemail feature, please contact Doximity Support so we can help investigate.

What type of information is appropriate to include in a voicemail delivered through the Direct to Voicemail feature?
Direct to Voicemail sends a standard voicemail to the recipient through their existing voicemail service. Healthcare providers should follow their organization’s standard policies and procedures when leaving voicemail messages for patients.
